Make Mends Meet

mending workshop + gathering

Mending your clothes is easy, fun, creative, quietly radical and cool. In fact it’s so cool that big brands “fake mend” their brand new items to get the look of “visible mending”.

Make Mends Meet is about the real thing. Mending together turns repair into a collective practice: sharing skills and resources, resisting throwaway culture and strengthening the social fabric in the process.

Somewhere between repair, darning and embroidery, visible mending fixes what is worn while adding something that wasn’t there before.

We’ll start with a few very simple stitches: running stitch and blanket stitch, and move from there to learn how to “create” fabric with the darning stitch. We will also explore making patches that can be added later. French knots can be used to decorate and create artful texture on existing garments.

A few small stitches might look out of place, but by repeating and layering them, they change their rhythm and a visual language begins to emerge.

All you need is a needle, some threads, a bit of fabric perhaps, a favorite item of clothes and imagination.

Mending skills super easy to learn and the possibilities are endless. Visible mending always looks good and makes your clothes better, regardless of perceived skill.

As an added benefit your mind will quiet down by transforming your thoughts into creativity that your hands translate into care.

These workshops are part of an evolving series of gatherings around stitch, repair, making and the ways material practice can help us think, connect and transform.

I’m interested in creating a space that extends beyond an individual workshop — somewhere to keep making, experimenting, exchanging ideas and spending time together through material practice.

Join the mailing list for future workshops, gatherings, experiments and the community taking shape around them.
