(un)Fashion: Creativity and Translations

Hard to believe that the book (un)Fashion hadn’t yet made its appearance  into my house and blog until this weekend when a friend brought it to my attention.

(un)Fashion presents a kaleidoscope of people from different cultures and portrays how they dress and adorn themselves away from the fashion shows and chain stores.  It refreshingly ignores  the Western conventional view of what’s beautiful and what’s not. Tibor Kalman, one of the graphic geniuses of the 20th century and  editor-in-chief of Colors magazine and his wife, illustrator Maia Kalman created this stunning gem of a book.

Take a look:

Some of the images remind me vaguely of this book: Natural Fashion: Tribal Decoration from Africa by Hans Silvester, which I blogged about in one of my first posts back in 2010. I’ve always been fascinated by culture and its expressions through fashion, music, film, art  and language.

Right now I’m busy working with languages;  another area that fascinates me since I first learned English 35 years ago in small town Germany . Currently I’m exploring different ways and avenues how to make language learning more accessible, fun and effective using a variety of tools including technology/art/music etc. (Which, by the way is a great excuse for reading French Vogue extensively and spend time watching foreign language soap operas on Netflix.)

Trying to understand what it takes to learn a language is fun and frankly quite creative.  Creating is closely linked to the process of translating or transforming an idea into “an expression”. Without a doubt, creating and translating have a close relationship.

These days I’m in the process of re-orienting myself and re-evaluating this blog, looking into ways of making it more into a cultural exploration.

As an example, here is one interesting clip from the Indonesian version of “The X-Factor”.  The clash between the singer’s voice, her selected music, the format of the show (exported to more than 40 countries)  and her dress display exactly the kind of cultural mélange that interests me.

Once I have a clearer picture of where this exploration takes me I’ll be back.

  3. i know you don’t post a lot, but I wanted you to know that i adore your blog. it’s such a nice getaway from the mainstreamers. i’ve purposefully stopped blog hopping because it threw a wrench in my creativity – me trying to be the real me – which is why i started blogging. I can come here though.

    thank you

I also find cultural perceptions of beauty (and of anything) very interesting. Probably because, just like you, I love (learning) languages, and do speak a couple of them. Of course, I couldn’t love languages without being interested in what other cultures have to offer… There are, indeed, many ways to learn languages and enjoy the process, but to me there’s nothing like living abroad. Unfortunately, It’s been a long time since I got that chance. Good luck learning French! I hope you’ll have all the fun you are looking for while learning!

Sometimes I feel like a reader gets a whole drefeifnt meaning from a post than what I was intending to write. This is one of those times. While the idea for this topic originated from Facebook interaction I wasn’t directing the ideas in the article towards social media marketing specifically. I’ve written (and given a webinar, and written the ebook) about the boundaries of personal and professional before. I think it’s clear that I’m generally opposed to the strict to keep it all separate’ school of thought. We are in a relationship economy and I feel one of the best ways to market your business is to make it personal. It’s also way more fun. Further, I believe that one can do that quite ethically and still maintain good boundaries.I’ve covered that. This piece was INTENDED to be specifically about religion, and to spread the notion that it is wise to be mindful of how and if you choose to include religious reference in ALL of your marketing materials (and behaviors) online and offline. I chose the title because it rang familiar to me, in the current political climate and public debates occurring about religion. Note the question mark at the end. I’m not saying what is right or wrong. I cannot possible make that decision for anyone but myself. I stated that in the comments when a reader asked that very question under my original facebook post. I’m encouraging thoughtfulness and perspective. (Also, I don’t need to be considered a healthcare provider by anyone but my client. I LIKE the flexibility of being on the periphery of healthcare’. If I wanted to have more clinical, less personal relationships with my clients, I would be a PT, or I would be an MT who specializes in a drefeifnt type of work.)

God works here, too . While I never saw God in the shop or behind the conteur, the owner of the business was a firm believer. I later discovered he had gotten very close to God when, as a miner, he was trapped underground during a mining accident. He never once tried to convert me and we never talked religion except when he told me his backstory. One of my favorite restaurants in town is certified Halal. It’s on the sign at the register and in the windows. Never will you see a religious message in the restaurant, but they are letting people know that the food is prepared in accordance with their beliefs and, if you are muslim, it’s ok to eat there. They are also open during Ramadan (that’s willpower, people!). Again, we all know their religion, but no one is offended by the message.I teach students that, if they use a symbol to tell people their religious or political beliefs, they will attract certain clientele and repel others. If you see that as a market opportunity to target a certain group, then by all means do so. Just don’t be surprised when others choose not to use your services. I also tell them that religion and politics do not belong in the massage room. They are both topics about which people are very passionate. And passion is not relaxing. So when my clients start talking politics (I live in the state capital, it’s our main industry) or religion, I simply tell them, Let’s change the subject because this is adding to your stress, not relieving it. I don’t really care if you wish me a Merry Christmas. Just try to wait until after Thanksgiving.
